Fosamax® Femur Fracture Attorney

Our Fosamax® femur fracture attorneys are investigating lawsuits on behalf of patients who have experienced a fractured femur after taking Fosamax®, a drug prescribed for treatment and prevention of osteoporosis.

According to reports, some female patients have experienced femur fractures while taking the medication. Interestingly, Fosamax® (alendronate sodium) is designed to suppress the breakdown of bone. But, some researchers believe that if taken for prolonged periods of time the medication can actually over suppress, which may result in an increased risk of stress fractures.

Fosamax® Broken Femur Lawsuits

A doctor has filed a Fosamax® lawsuit against Merck, alleging her femur fracture was caused by the medication. Reportedly, Dr. Jennifer Schneider experienced a broken femur while riding on a New York City subway. She told reporters that her bone broke when the train jolted suddenly. Schneider’s injury occurred in October 2001. She had been taking Fosamax® since 1995.

Schneider is among a number of women who claim to have experienced a broken femur while using the medication. She told reporters that although thinning bones may be more prone to fractures, the femur bone should not break, as it is one of the strongest bones in the body. She spoke to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), asking the agency to warn people of the potential dangers associated with the medication, and to advise against using Fosamax® for long periods of time.

According to reports, Schneider was among 17 other women claiming spontaneous, low-impact femur fractures at the FDA hearing. All the women say they were also taking Fosamax® or another bisphosphonate such as Boniva, Reclast and Actonel during the time of their injury.

What Does This Mean?

Merck still claims there is no evidence linking Fosamax® to femur breaks. The company says it is conducting studies to investigate a link between the drug and subtrochanteric femoral fractures.

In the meantime, what does this mean for people who suffer a bone fracture while taking Fosamax® or a similar drug?
